Local areaThis region has a glorious past as well as a varied landscape. From the Mediterranean Sea, with its splendid sandy beaches, first comes a rather flat plane with a few inland lakes such as the 'Etang du Thau' and the 'Etang du Vic'. Along the shore lie some hills with small towns adorning them, the history of which goes far back to the beginning of time: Sete, Agde, Pezenas, Beziers. Further inland stretch endless vineyards. Still further to the north the landscape becomes distinctly hilly. Limestone subsoil varies with rag stone and red soil containing bauxite at the 'Lac du Salagou'. Limestone and rag stone are excellent for cultivating vines. It is an amazing view, rows of vines standing between boulders yet still bearing grapes! Eroding rivers have carved deep tracks into the limestone, often with enormous dimensions such as at the 'Cirque de Navacelles' and 'Gorges d' Heric', the town of Minerve and the dried out area at Moureze. The rivers disappear underground at some places, creating caves. The stalactite caves of Clamouse are the most famous and are among the most beautiful in France. In the surrounding countryside you can find reservoirs perfectly suited to water sports. In the 'Oppidium of Enserune' there are findings that date back to the 6th century BC. A hill with an excavation site is open for visitors. Agde contains remnants from the time when locals traded with the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Beziers there are 9 sluices in a row: 'Les Neuf Ecluses' is another place of interest. For the fans of modern architecture a visit to Montpellier is a must: the architect Bofill has built a new quarter there in an original style that combines concrete with ancient Greek pillars.
