Local areaThis campsite is situated in the hinterland of Provence, 70 kilometers from the sea and town of Aix-en-Provence. The most famous street of Aix-en-Provence is Cours Mirabeau, an avenue of trees, ancient manor houses and two wells. North of Cours Mirabeau lies the old town center with its Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur which dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Here you will also find the famous Hotel de Ville. South of Cours Mirabeau is the Mazarin district which contains the homes of aristocrats, magistrates and other dignitaries from the 17th century. The campsite is located in the village of Simiane la Rotonde. This beautiful little village is situated on a hillside surrounded by lavender fields. It has a rich historical past and some beautiful sights dating from the Middle Ages and Renaissance period including a wonderful old castle. Only the rotunda remains from the old castle. This rotunda is a big round fortress tower situated on the highest point of the hill. In 1841 it was declared a historic monument and has recently been completely restored. The tower is visited by more than 6,000 people annually and each year a music festival is held here. The tourist information center is also housed here and there are exhibitions, conferences and misc. concerts throughout the year. The old castle was once owned by the powerful Agoult-Simiane family, who governed the country of Apt and Sault for seven centuries.
